Christmas is the most popular time to get engaged and that’s official! The Marriage Proposal Survey by Chillisauce spoke to over 10,000 people and found “Between the 24th December and 1st January, there are more proposals and engagements than at any other time of year”.
They also found that Valentine’s day is the most popular day to get engaged! With a total of 36% of votes, Valentine’s day outshone any other day of the year for receiving the most amount of proposals.
Well, we can report that our wedding enquires double in January! We haven’t done any research on the reason behind the trend but I think it’s down to Christmas being over and the New Year resolutions kicking in and all those newly engaged couples start their research as they want to set the date!

11 things to consider when setting the date:
1. Venue choice and availability
The first decision is the biggest one! Where to hold the wedding. This involves researching wedding directories, websites and visiting venues, so chicken and egg!
Deciding on the type of venue you want is certainly the start of the wedding planning process. A castle, Manor house, or something modern like a trendy restaurant- you’ve got a number of options to choose from.
You can ring around venues to see who has your chosen date or pick your venue and choose an available date while juggling points 2-10!
We recommend you come and view our beautiful Barn Wedding Venue in Berkshire, Lillibrooke Manor and Barns. Come & see for yourself and then find a few available dates that suit. We can hold the date for you for a couple of days while you check with the Church/Registrars, nearest and dearest and calendar. The earlier you visit the better the choice of dates and couples do book two years in advance!
2. Church or civil ceremony
So you have found your venue and you want to get married in a local church? You will have to check with the vicar or priest about their availability and fingers crossed their diaries will be free on your big day!
65% of couples get married onsite at Lillibrooke Manor and Barns. You are required to book the Registrar and if this is at short notice then their availability needs to be checked too. Registrars in the Maidenhead area cannot be booked more than a year in advance so we recommend setting a diary reminder to book the Registrar exactly a year in advance so that you get your chosen time of ceremony!
Lillibrooke is an exclusive hire wedding venue with indoor & outdoor options and a total of 4 licensed areas, so you’re spoilt for choice and covered whatever the weather decides to do on your day!
3. Weekday or weekend
You can marry on any day of the week and weekdays are now very popular. If Fridays and Saturdays are all booked at your favourite venue in your chosen month then be open to Sunday to Thursday dates. There may be considerable budget savings on venue hire for weekdays so well worth thinking about!
4. Season / Month
The month to marry will be partly based when you are booking and how long you want to wait. Couples typically book a full year or two in advance. Sometimes the season is a deciding factor as wedding styles tend to change as you go through the seasons. Lillibrooke Manor is an all-season venue and our experienced events team will help you plan your day to make the most of any season!
Lillibrooke is beautiful all year round, but the grounds do tend to explode with colour during the summer months and with the gardens available to use during your wedding, it opens up options for outdoor ceremonies and quintessentially English garden drink receptions.
Winter weddings are truly magical if you’ve decided that they’re for you. Here’s some inspiration of how Lillibrooke Manor can be the perfect backdrop for as a winter wedding venue in Berkshire.

5. Work commitments of nearest and dearest
For those closest to you we’d recommend you check their availability before booking a date!
6. Special dates and anniversaries
You may have in mind a very special date that you’d love to get married on. The anniversary of your first date? Your parents wedding anniversary?
7. Memorable dates
Why not look for a date that is easy to remember! How about 20/11/20 or 20/12/20 both are available!
8. Major sporting event clashes
Don’t fancy the world cup final on your wedding day?! Check out major events. The rugby world cup 2019 was very popular during setting up of weddings! It is possible to present major events on the big screen in the Great Barn or Small Barn at Lillibrooke Manor so if you are huge sporting fans feel free to factor this in!
9. Bank Holidays
Consider booking your wedding on a bank holiday weekend and make more of your wedding weekend with family able to take time off to relax and travel.
All decisions will come back to the budget! We are currently running a special offer on all available dates until the end of 2020

What Makes Lillibrooke Manor an Award-Winning Venue? Let’s go behind the scenes and find out!
Just this year Lillibrooke Manor won the ‘Thames Valley Wedding Venue of the Year’ award, which is why we thought we’d tell you about what goes on behind the scenes of an award-winning wedding and events venue.
The large Heritage Venues team based at Lillibrooke Manor works as one to delight their clients, never losing the personal touch however many events there are.
Facilities & Venue Management – Rory deals with everything that a listed 15th century venue and 15 acres of grounds can throw at him. All those things that are taken for granted behind the scenes keep everyone comfortable and safe in a beautifully maintained environment, all managed personally by him.
Sales & Events Team – Jonny, Ellie and Laura start by sending detailed information immediately to any enquiry, then arranging a one-to-one viewing. During the venue tour they get to know their customer, tailor the tour to their needs, show them every area of our stunning venue, and answer every question – including some they may not have thought of yet! The customers are then given continued guidance, tailored quotes to fit their budget, and ongoing support.
Operations & Events Team – Alys, Fiona and Kate step in closer to the event to work on logistics and detailed planning of the itinerary, including all the special requirements, menus, table plans, regular liaison with the Chefs, full briefing to the event team, and providing invaluable guidance and support to the customer throughout. Their organised and experienced approach helps calm even the most nervous brides, and the most time-poor corporate organisers!
Kitchen Team – Head Chef Krimo, who trained under Marco Pierre White amongst others, leads an experienced and highly creative team of Chefs. Bartosz, Noreddine, Kasia and Deyan all share his passion to deliver superb food, beautifully presented, using the best ingredients. Working from the purpose-built banqueting kitchens opened at Lillibrooke in the summer of 2018, they all acknowledge that they simply couldn’t do what they do without the amazing support of their tireless KPs, Jon and Aldona.
The event itself sees an army of trusted and highly trained event staff to set up the venue, laying everything out as planned with an unsurpassed attention to detail. The dedicated Event Managers Vincent, Sam, Annabel and Louise are long-standing, highly qualified and experienced in their craft, calmly overseeing their teams and providing hugely appreciated personal service to the customer throughout their event.
Feedback and glowing reviews are what the team live for, to know all their combined hard work led to the customer and all their guests having the most wonderful time. Emails are displayed in the offices as a reminder during demanding days of how worthwhile it all is!
The success of Lilllibrooke Manor & Barns has led to the very recent appointment of the Heritage Venues team to manage another local venue – the stunning Stanlake Park Wine Estate in Twyford. With a beautiful Coach House, Walled Garden and Barn in the stunning setting of their vineyards, the estate caters for the growing trend for quality British wines.
If you would like this award-winning team to look after your event, please get in touch with Jonny or Ellie.

What Wedding Dress Suits Me?
The Lillibrooke Manor office team LOVE weddings, and we especially love to guess what our brides will wear. We are involved in every detail running up to the big day but what we don’t know is what the bride will be wearing! A princess dress perhaps? Could it be lacy this time? Only time can tell!
As 3 of our team are hoping to be engaged soon, we love getting inspiration from all of our brides – you should see us all taking (very) sneaky peaks of the dress as the brides walk past the office for the first time! We all swoon over our bride’s chosen dress every. single. time. And that’s why we’ve come up with (and had a great time with) this super fun and easy way to choose the perfect style of your wedding dress!
Let us know if it works for you!
A-line Wedding Dresses
Perhaps the most popular all, this dress is perfect for that sophisticated, perfect look that many brides dream of. It’s simplistic cut can suit any bride, and for those who want to have a more intricate a-line dress, our bride Jess shows us just how to do that!

Sheath Wedding Dresses
The sheath dress is also a popular choice for many. Its elegance and simplicity strikes a beautiful angelic look for the bride. It is a relatively easy dress to wear, which is why those who want everything at their wedding to be perfect and relaxed would be suited to this style of dress.
Ball Gown Wedding Dresses
This captivating style is perfect for brides who dream of a fairytale wedding. It certainly will keep everyone’s eyes on the bride as many will marvel at the beauty of it. Our bride Emtinan shows us exactly how a big dress should be worn, and she does it effortlessly too!
Princess Wedding Dresses
The princess wedding dress looks stunning, its large skirt and delicate top is an idyllic dress for any wedding theme. Much like the ball gown wedding dress, this is certainly one that will draw the much-deserved attention, our bride Lisa shows us just how beautiful it can be!
Empire Wedding Dresses
The empire wedding dress is perfect for an easy-going relaxed, happy wedding day. Even though it isn’t as bold and intricate as other dress styles, our brides love this look for its simplicity and ethereal feel. This romantic style is also suited to all body types, making it an obvious choice for many.

Your Christmas Party at Lillibrooke Manor
Even though Christmas traditions never change, we still find that the organisation of a Christmas party is one of the most stressful challenges of the year. What do I make for the vegans? Where is that homemade stuffing recipe? How can I avoid the in-laws this time?(!)

Baby, it’s cold outside
There’s no need to worry about the cold outside, baby. Our heated Great Barn could keep even the 3 wise men warm and toasty! Along with warm mulled wine, a freshly baked Christmas pudding and hot chocolates in the evening, nothing could keep you from feeling content while the cold winds blow outside.
Santa Claus is coming to town

Honestly, all I want for Christmas is the feast that comes every year. The roast potatoes, the stuffing, the gravy and the all-important turkey (or Linda McCartney’s ‘beef’ wellington for the vegetarians)!
Lillibrooke Manor’s team of highly skilled chefs, however, take the Christmas feast to another level of magnificence. We offer multiple menus to fit your own traditions and are flexible to your needs to ensure your Christmas meal is tailored perfectly to you.

There are so many different ways to entertain your guests, but what are the secrets to making sure you have a fun and creative wedding at Lillibrooke Manor?
Personalisation is key to make your wedding your own, but how can one turn the tables to make it the best wedding ever?
For example, having a sweets buffet with jars named after different inside jokes or names of different family or friends can be a fun twist to make your day more entertaining. But don’t just stop at sweets buffets; personalise anything you want! For example, change your table names to different places you’ve had dates with your other half, or put people’s nicknames on the seating plan instead of their full name – it’s the small details that put the cherry on top!
Next? You guessed it… Games!
Games are a great way to have an exciting wedding for all; it makes your wedding unique and encourages friends and family to mingle and have fun. Over the years, Lillibrooke has seen games such as giant Jenga, mini golf and even inflatables! At Lillibrooke Manor, you can also choose where to have your garden games: we have 3 different gardens all suitable for outdoors games.
For those planning a winter wedding, having alternative entertainment, like singing waiters, magicians, selfie mirrors and caricature artists is an excellent alternative to keep guests busy! Check out our preferred suppliers page for help on finding excellent wedding entertainment and more.
Speeches are a classic tradition to weddings across the UK, but to make it one of the highlights of the wedding, we suggest asking your speakers to make their speeches engaging and creative. This is where the fun comes in! Playing ‘wedding speech bingo’ or giving your guests a quiz where they have to find the answers in the speeches.
And finally… Socialise!
As the bride and groom, you should try to speak to all of your guests to celebrate your wedding day with each and every one of them. Showing your appreciation will keep guests happy and pleased they made time to celebrate your day.
Also, speaking about being social – you could even take your wedding day to social media. Using a particular hashtag of your choosing will let everyone know you’re tying the knot, but also you can search the hashtag afterwards and see everyone’s photos!
But most importantly, relax and have fun!

Here at Lillibrooke, we have a whole array of wedding styles; from modern to traditional to fantastically quirky, we have the lot! However each year, different decors, colours and styling are popular, and 2019 is no different.
Guests are sending their messages in different ways this year. Instead of the standard book where guests have previously been able to write on a page sharing their love to the happy couple, we have seen much more creative ways.
Jigsaw pieces, wish jars, wooden letters – anything that involves more fun and creativity for guests to partake in. We have been loving these new ways of sharing messages, but also the entertainment guests get from doing this! How will you ask your guests to send messages to you?
What we love:
- posting messages in a mini post-box
- a scrapbook to write in; offering a polaroid camera for them to put a picture next to their message
- providing small pieces of paper to put ‘a message in a bottle’!
Lucy Davenport Photography
Centrepieces can vary depending on the personality of the couple and the chosen theme of the wedding. Lillibrooke couples are beginning to prefer small and simple pieces, a big move away from larger single centrepieces from past years.
Small jars of flowers, tealights and wooden features are preferred items for the centrepiece. Clusters of smaller items are growing in popularity, which we have noticed has improved conversations across tables, and has made it easier for guests to communicate with all others sat at the table with them, so a great development all round!
What we love:
- hessian materials
- wooden rustic-look boxes or rustic jars
- quirky glass designs for tealights to sit in
Flower décor is a key part to designing your wedding theme and we have seen many fabulous and dainty flower displays over the years here at Lillibrooke. However this year we have seen a popular development in the ways flowers have been displayed at our venue.
Lillibrooke has seen flower décor develop this year from thick flower arches in the Great and Small barn to hanging flower instillations and personalised floral hoops. These fabulous developments have become beautiful finishing touches to the wedding theme design.
What we love:
- flowers at entrances of doorways
- flower hoops and arches
- flowers in centrepieces

Personalisation of Wedding Ceremony
Even though a traditional registrar-led ceremony remains most popular at Lillibrooke, we have seen more couples opting for personalised ceremonies, even if they are only small changes.
We have thoroughly enjoyed this development, as every wedding should be the couples own, and unique to them. This lovely development has led to a much more personal and intimate wedding ceremony for those who choose to have their ceremony personalised.
What we love:
- writing own vows
- decor in the ceremony room
- owl/dog/animal ring-bearers
These are just some of the trends we’ve seen in 2019, for more inspiration and ideas, view our Pinterest page which has thousands of images for you to see!
